“So what’s the big deal about HD television?” many people ask. Well it’s really quite simple. Remember those old 8 track tapes many years ago? The sound quality was o.k., but then came compact discs and the sound was great. HD television is very much like that. The picture clarity is superb to standard definition television.

The amounnt of “dots” that is required to fill up a HD television is immensely more than the required “dots” to fill up a standard televsion. The end result being a more sharper almost three dimensional picture. The best way to describe the difference is when I looked at Discovery Channel HD and saw a snake. On my standard television the picture was pretty good, but on the HD televison I could see the spacing between the snakes scales whereas, on the standard you could only see the outline of the scales.

If you watch any television at all, you probably know that the competition between the cable TV and satellite TV services is quite fierce. I see commercials all the time from the cable companies that attack the reliability of satellite TV. Personally, I’m a devoted Dish Network Satellite TV customer and I really don’t care for cable TV companies very much at all.

As much as I dislike cable, up until recently, they did have one big advantage over satellite and that was "on demand" programming. Although my Dish Network service does offer quite a few pay-per-view channels, there really was no extensive on demand programming like what the cable television companies are offering. That’s beginning to change.

Recently I turned on my Dish Network VIP-622 DVR and was greeted by an on-screen message that informed me that a new software upgrade was applied automatically to my unit. Curious, I read the details of the upgrade that were offered.

I was quite surprised to learn that my DVR could now be connected to my broadband internet connection. That may not sound all that exciting until you learn that this new capability allows Dish Network to begin offering a lot more on demand programming that will be delivered to my DVR over the internet.

This new development makes my experience as a Dish Network customer even more satisfying.

The competition between satellite and cable is not likely to end any time soon. The commercials will continue and you will see competing offers for the best Dish Network deals and the best cable TV deals for a long time to come.

My parents also recently purchased a very big TV. They went for the 42″ Sony with plasma screen. The reason for this purchase is quite hilarious. My parents previously had a late model, 32″ television in their living room. It drove my mother crazy to have that big TV sitting out plain view for all to see. She has some strange 1950’s mentality, that it’s somehow inappropriate for one to show off their TV set. I’m very happy with my 42 flat panel lcd tv. The picture quality and the vivid colors are just great. Even though it was a bit pricey, this was still one of the best investments I have ever made. I enjoy watching my lcd tv every day, and will do for long time, so it was defenetly worth it. My family loves me for it too. It was hard to convince them at first, but now they are very happy with my decision. Needless to say, me too.

I moved in with a family, next, waiting for my ideal living situation to come up. They had a Direct TV dish—in a town where the wires are all above ground and the trees are still more in population than the wires or the Direct TV dishes, and where the weather is typically violent…windy, rainy, etc.. In other words, when it rained, the Direct TV dish went out, then would adjust itself by reloading, if you will, by reconnecting…in a matter of minutes.
