The Garmin 270 was a godsend on our trip to Europe. My husband is such a typically guy driver. Whenever he gets lost, he makes up the excuse that he is exploring a different road. I’ve asked him many times to simply pull over at a gas station and ask for driving directions. But does he listen to me? Of course not. For Christmas this year, I plan to get him a GPS unit. That way, he can remain being a typical guy and not have to ask a real person for directions. Instead, he can use the GPS to help him get unlost.

There are so many GPS units on the market today as I’ve discovered while shopping for a unit. They come in all different sizes and features. I think that I want to get a GPS unit with a bigger screen, say 5-inches, so that it is easier to see. The one unit that I have my eye on is the Cobra NavOne 5000. It has a 5″ display, bluetooth, and a good brand name. I also found a store that offers free shipping.

As a pilot, I couldn’t agree more with an article I read recently entitled, “Smart Pilots Fly with GPS.� In today’s day and age where disasters happen constantly and something going wrong is to be expected, it’s important to be as prepared as possible. Flying with GPS allows you to know where you are, where you’re going, and if there are any emergency stopping points along the way. I mean, you don’t want to be flying from one end of California to the other without knowing where the emergency landing sites are. I always equip my planes with a Garmin Aviation GPS or a similar model, because I never want my wife to get a couple of police officers at her front door one day announcing any unpleasant news.

I used a Garmin V Deluxe I was shocked. I fell utterly in love with this high-tech mapping system. I didn’t even have to look at the little screen. I simply punched in my starting address and the destination address. The GPS system informed me of how many miles I would have to travel and what time I should expect to arrive. As I drove, it spoke to me and told me what exits to take. And even when I wasn’t able to take a particular ramp due to construction, the Garmin V Deluxe quickly re-routed.
