Planting Zones

Planting zones in the United States, which are also known as Hardiness Zones, can be thought of as the rate of survival to the plant life in that particular region during cold periods, such as winter. In effect it is the survival rate ability of a plant during the winter months that can fruitfully live on into the next growing season. The zones were first developed by the United States Department of Agriculture, or the USDA. After the USDA developed these zones, they were subsequently adopted elsewhere. They are categorized according to the mean of the lowest temperature recorded each winter, termed the “average annual minimum temperature”.

Flowering Cherry Trees Of Washington DC

Many of the flowering cherry trees that I found online primarily grew in the southern zones of the country. One of my favorite varieties is the weeping flowering cherry tree that makes a lovely focal point in the center of my backyard. This species has plenty of long, leaning branches that look as though they are weighted down with flowers during the peak of their blooming season. I discovered that other varieties might bloom at slightly different times, so by collecting a few different species, I was able to extend my bloom time by a few weeks.
I remember seeing pictures of the Washington Monument in springtime when I was a kid, when the entire scene surrounding this majestic structure was filled with a blanket of pink. This is due to the large number of Okame flowering cherry trees, the star of the show in Washington, D.C. in the spring.

Butterfly Gardening

Butterfly gardening refers to growing flowers and plants that attract butterflies. These dainty and colorful creatures can make your garden look beautiful and delightful. However, if you have a cat, do not attempt this type of gardening as the cat will definitely hunt and kill the butterflies. There is no fixed rule for developing a butterfly garden. You can pick a style that you like and ensure that you grow all sorts of flowers and plants that attract the butterflies you want around your home. The idea behind butterfly gardening is to attract the species of butterflies that live in your area.

Container Gardening

Container gardening is usually used in atriums and on balconies, patios, and roof tops. Container gardening is a great way to garden, no matter how much space you have. Containers that are used for container gardening can be anything from gallon milk jugs with the tops cut off to terracotta pots, plastic window boxes to half barrels. Containers can be custom-made for an individual, giving everyone an opportunity to exercise their green thumb.

Do You Want a Water Feature?

A lot of people who normally take a do-it-yourself approach to gardening make an exception when it comes to waterfalls. They figure that they had better leave it to a water features garden expert. This perspective definitely has some advantages to it. There are a lot of things that could go wrong when you’re designing water features garden displays. The pump has to be set up properly, cement has be laid under any pools or streams, and the landscaping has to be at the right angle to get the proper flow of water down hill. If you are a novice, you should definitely stay away from it.

Nevertheless, if you have the time to experiment with water features gardens and know your way around a tool shed pretty well, you might consider doing it yourself.

Hanging Baskets for instant color

Hanging baskets are best suited to hanging or trailing plants, which cascade down to eye level. Plants like begonia, when young, may be hung from wall-mounted hangers, bringing them within easy view. Older begonias sprout baby-size trailers, similar to the so-called spider plant. Begonias will die down in winter if left outdoors, but will continue to thrive if wintered over indoors.

The Dreaded Essay Questions Portion

A question asked could be turned around in so many different ways. You might try to disguise the fact that you don’t know the question and are just babbling but your teacher may see right through that. Maybe they’ll give you some points for your creative ramblings but it certainly won’t help you to pass the class. English, History and Literature classes are quite popular for having tests with essay questions. Sometimes you might be lucky and know ahead of time that there will be essay questions. Other times, the teacher stuck some questions on there and you weren’t prepared in the least. Classes like math and science may have traditional tests and don’t require essay questions.

Landscaping Projects

Any landscaping project takes time to put together. You need to lay it out in your head, then transfer it to paper and then put it in place by shifting the present into what you envision. Perhaps, you’d even like to light up you house numbers or your pool area. You may even want to line a pathway or light up a flower or plant arrangement. The question to be answered is how to do all this.

Using Solar Yard Lighting

If you have a backyard chances are that you have thought about using solar yard lighting to provide night illumination. A big advantage with them is that there is no wiring running across your lawn, which could cause people to trip. The main thing to consider is that your yard must get direct sunlight during the day to charge the lights. They generate and store power during the day and then when the sun has gone down they release it, which is very similar to how a satellite works.

New to Hydroponic Gardening

Those who are new to hydropponic gardening often overbuy on supplies that they possibly may not need when first starting out. After all, the very basic hydroponic supplies that you need when starting out can readily be found in and around your home! Use these first before expanding to the more expensive hydroponic supplies. Beginning tables for your plants can include items as simple as plastic tubs and a child’s swimming pool.

This is meant literally as well as figuratively, as gnomes come in a variety of bright colours. Thanks to the modern trend that embraces everything retro, the status of garden gnomes has been elevated to that of pop-culture icons.

There can be nothing more enthralling and charming than a decorative birdhouse in your garden. Not only is it a wonderful aesthetic addition but it also brings nature in full bloom right into your living space. The sheer pleasure of watching birds of different species fly in and out of the birdhouse is indescribable. When I was a beginner into the world of birding, I was a tad confused about what kind of birdhouse to opt for. Should I choose a wooden decorative birdhouse? Or should I go for a much more expensive fancy birdhouse? I came to know much later than I also needed to invest in a good quality birdbath and hence opted for a wooden birdhouse.

Art of Bonsai

The art of bonsai
has an ancient history and it is difficult to pinpoint just when it began. The origins of bonsai can be traced back through the history of the development of bonsai in Japan and earlier in China.

As with other forms of art, bonsai would have been developed from activities which were based on practical needs.

The idea of planting a tree in a pot would not occur spontaneously in a fully formed manner. It would evolve over a period of time from the influence of other ideas associated with the cultivation of plants. In particular the growing of plants primarily for their beauty of colour or form, combined with lack of space in which to grow them would have been the genesis of bonsai.

This perspective definitely has some advantages to it. There are a lot of things that could go wrong when you’re designing water features garden displays. Correctly Seeding A Lawn

The weather, it seems, wants to change each season. We are used to that, of course, but some of the changes are drastic from one summer to the next. What this means is that while one year you may experience good rainfall in your area, the next summer may be so dry that you go through a drought. This causes many problems, and one can be that your lawn is not what it should be, or what it used to be. When that happens, you may want to think about the best way to go about seeding a lawn.
Planting or reseeding may not be a priority, but if it is something you want to do, you have to do it the right way. First and foremost, you have to decide if it is worth the time and expense. You may only need to do a few spots that have lost some thickness, or you may find that you have to cover everything on your property when seeding a lawn. For most, the answer is the second one. Seeding a lawn in just a few patches rarely looks good when your new grass has grown in. It may be more lush than the rest of your natural grass, which can look just as bad as the bald spots.

Hillside Landscaping

Sloped and hillside landscaping tend to develop dry dead spots during the hot part of the season. This is primarily due to water run off before it has a chance to saturate into the soil. Slopes can also be difficult to mulch because lighter organic mulch ends up rolling down.

Wiring Your Own Hot Tub - Legal and Code Issues

If while installing your hot tub you violate building codes you could be potentially penalized in a number of different ways. You could be fined. You could also be forced to take down all of the work and have it installed by a licensed electrician thus causing you to incur more expense than if you simply hired an electrician in the first place. It could also make it difficult to resell your home if during the sale it’s discovered that some wiring was done not according to code. Bottom line is that, even if you know 100% how to wire a hot tub without difficulty, you need to check with your building board to ensure that your way of doing things will meet city standards.
