Most boys have at least a couple of pairs of shoes in his closet, it’s also true that boy’s shoes can be used hard and can wear out quickly. The more expensive boy’s shoes are well-constructed, made of leather and allow you to walk comfortably for significant distances, or at least stand in for hours, as you play with friends.

On the other hand, perhaps the poster pictures of boys shoes are the one-occasion wear shoes. For example, a pair of training shoes probably won’t get an encore at another event. Another example might be a pair of espadrilles, perfect for a particular sunny day, but nothing else. Sometimes we buy a smart pair of boys shoes, just because they’re on sale and will work with lots of different types of trouser. Most of us have more shoes than we could possibly use, so boys shoes fit with a boy’s desire for a wide range of foot wear from which to choose, while keeping the budget in line.

My personal definition of boy’s shoes is any shoe that isn’t a sneaker or training shoe. High tech toys are widely available for children. These toys tend to be busy, flashy, and loud. Some are even promoted for babies as young as newborns. Personally, I have my share of such toys around the house and I’m not judging parents who buy and use them. My two-year-old’s favorite toy is my iPod touch and that’s about as high tech as it gets.

Still, I want to remind parents and caregivers that the simple toys are just as good as the ones using the latest technologies. In some cases, they offer a distinct advantage. An example of one advantage is not needing batteries.

My kids are crazy about their singing, dancing, rapping, and joke telling Elmo, but Elmo has an insatiable appetite for AA batteries and it’s hard to keep enough on hand to keep the show going. The same goes for a handful of other toys in my house that are desperately in need of a battery change.

As I mention “keeping the show going” I think of how some of our toys are more entertaining than interactive. Which brings me finally to my point of simple toys sometimes being better for babies.

An example is a set of giant foam blocks. These blocks are exactly what they sound like and that makes them very basic toys. However, while playing with these blocks a baby, toddler, or preschooler can engage in creative play while developing kinesthetic and motor skills. The fact that children absolutely adore and enjoy these toys is just as important as their developmental value.

I can remember going to the attic at grandma’s to find a treasure chest of nostalgic classic wooden toys that she had collected over the years from not only her children but had also managed to keep toys from her childhood. Over the years when children would visit and become fidgety she would go to the attic and bring something down for the child to play with.
