Like most kids back in the day, I spent quite a bit of my allowance on comics featuring my favorite superheroes. At that time, I never thought the comics would actually be worth more than the 50 cents or dollar I paid for it, so I didn’t bother trying to keep them in pristine condition. I would routinely roll them up and stuff them in my back pockets, trade them with friends, or simply throw them away. Needless to say, I’m kicking myself for not saving a handful of old Spiderman comic books out of all the ones I bought back then!

If I had saved some of my Spiderman comic books, I would no doubt be able to sell them for a nice profit. There are lots of collectors out there who are willing to pay top dollar to get their hands on rare issues. I never had the first issue, which was released in 1963, but if I did, I’d be able to get somewhere in the neighborhood of $40,000 for it! Wow! Checking the values of Spiderman comic books that I know were once in my possession, I see that I probably would have been able to get close to $1,000 for the whole lot — provided the issues were in mint condition. That’s not exactly a windfall, but it’s still an amazing profit over the list price.

For serious collectors out there looking to purchase more Spiderman comic books, several options exist. You can go to various conventions and shows where dealers and other collectors congregate to buy, sell, and trade. This is the best way to make purchases of rare issues because you can actually see the condition for yourself before determining whether or not to pay the asking price. If you don’t feel like heading out to a convention, then you can simply buy whichever Spiderman comic books you want over the Internet from auction sites or collector sites. You’ll have to perform your own due diligence regarding potential sellers to make sure nobody else has had any major problems with them, but otherwise this option should be a perfectly safe way to add to your collection.

Thinking about all this stuff again makes me feel like getting into collecting Spiderman comic books! It would be cool to revisit some of my favorite issues from when I was a kid, and at least this time around I’d appreciate their value. I would know how to take care of them and keep them in mint condition so that I can pass my collection on to my children or else sell it in the future. Obviously I’d have to start off small, but maybe someday I’ll end up with a couple of rare Spiderman comic books that I can be really proud of!

When my wife and I go shopping for books, she always wants to go to Barnes & Noble, and I always want to go to a mom-and-pop bookstore in our community. She frowns and tells me that all of the books there are used, and I always respond by saying that second hand books are fine by me.

My love affair with books began many moons ago, when I was a young child and started reading the Encyclopedia Brown series. I knew then that I would always derive great pleasure from reading, and that eventually evolved into a love of writing as well.

I made it a point to attend book fairs on a regular basis, and of course, those have plenty of second hand books. It never really mattered to me whether the book was brand new, because to me, that really had nothing to do with the book itself. It was still the same story, and unless it was just tattered to the point of being almost unreadable, what did it matter to me if it belonged to somebody else first?

Another great thing about second hand books is that they are a lot cheaper than buying a book brand-new. If it is up to me, I would rather buy four or five used books and have a great selection to choose from than just one brand-new book.

Over the years, I have increased my book collection exponentially and now have more than 3,000 volumes in my personal library. The interesting thing about it is that the vast majority of them are second hand books, and I am completely OK with that.

One of my favorite places to go shopping for books is a local thrift store. They have an extensive collection of books, all of which are second hand, and I will find books there that I can’t find at other bookstores, or that I would otherwise have to order online.

One such book that comes to mind was “New Grub Street” by George Gissing. I looked in a number of stores for that book, willing to pay whatever price they charged just to make it a part of my personal collection, and ended up finding a used copy of it at the thrift store for 50 cents!

My wife is always giving me a hard time about it because she says that I don’t know where those books have been. The fact of the matter is that I have never contracted a serious illness from reading or handling second hand books. I can get more for my money, and a lot of used book sales have a lot of hidden treasures. I know that some people want new books, but second hand books are fine with me.

Curious George stories captured my attention after I enjoyed tremendously the movie of the same title. Since then I have borrowed the Curious George books authored by H.A.Rey and have them read to my kids.

It is really interesting and absorbing how curiosity have drawn the monkey to befriend the Man with the Yellow Hat who eventually named his new found friend George. So far the Man with the Yellow Hat has not a name mentioned in the books I have read, except the name Ted used in the movie. And so I wonder who is the main person in the story.

This is one Bible verse that encourages and reminds me and all to be joyful in hope, patient in affliction and faithful in prayer. It was drawn as a constant word picture so that we can easily remember the words of the verse and let it leave a deeper impression into our hearts.

This short verse which can be captured in three separate phrases, contains three attitudes in three different situations.

Be joyful in hope. When we hope, it is hope that does not disappoints. It is hope that is looking forward to something that brings a smile to your face or someone that lets you shed a reunion tear.

Be patient in affliction. In times of affliction and especially strong adversity, it is very trying and difficult to be patient. Certainly it takes a lot of you when you put into practice patience.
