Good friends of ours just had their first baby – an adorable baby girl named Madison Lee. We have been talking about what to buy them as a gift. We have had so many ideas, but finally settled on a baby gift basket.

High tech toys are widely available for children. These toys tend to be busy, flashy, and loud. Some are even promoted for babies as young as newborns. Personally, I have my share of such toys around the house and I’m not judging parents who buy and use them. My two-year-old’s favorite toy is my iPod touch and that’s about as high tech as it gets.

Still, I want to remind parents and caregivers that the simple toys are just as good as the ones using the latest technologies. In some cases, they offer a distinct advantage. An example of one advantage is not needing batteries.

My kids are crazy about their singing, dancing, rapping, and joke telling Elmo, but Elmo has an insatiable appetite for AA batteries and it’s hard to keep enough on hand to keep the show going. The same goes for a handful of other toys in my house that are desperately in need of a battery change.

As I mention “keeping the show going” I think of how some of our toys are more entertaining than interactive. Which brings me finally to my point of simple toys sometimes being better for babies.

An example is a set of giant foam blocks. These blocks are exactly what they sound like and that makes them very basic toys. However, while playing with these blocks a baby, toddler, or preschooler can engage in creative play while developing kinesthetic and motor skills. The fact that children absolutely adore and enjoy these toys is just as important as their developmental value.
