Does Masking Tinnitus Make it Better?

Some people find external and artificial sounds preferable to the sounds produced by tinnitus.

One way to help you cope with tinnitus is to use technical equipment that masks or cancels out the tinnitus sounds. Other coping strategies are available. Consult your ear specialist to find the right strategy for you.

Tinnitus Masker

A tinnitus Masker is an electronic hearing aid device that generates and emits broad-band or narrow-band noise at low levels, designed to mask the symptoms of tinnitus. Such masking noise is also referred to as white noise. For an individual suffering from both hearing loss and tinnitus, the masker and the hearing aid may operate together as one instrument.

Hearing aids

A so-called open hearing aid may mask your tinnitus because it increases the information available to the brain by picking up background sounds around you.
Earlier types of hearing aids closed off the ear entirely and left the patient with a strange sense of a hollow resound, amplifying chewing sounds and, at times, even the tinnitus.

The new type of open hearing aid is so thin that this sensation is eliminated while still allowing sounds from the outside to pass into the ear.
