Is your Car Getting its Best Gas Mileage?
There are many factors that can reduce the optimum gas mileage of a car. If you suspect your vehicle is getting poor mileage than it should, it makes sense to do a test.
To determine the gas mileage of a car, first write down the odometer reading before filling up your tank – or if you have a trip meter, just reset it to zero. Then fill up the tank and drive as you normally would, using up at least a quarter tank.
When you fill up again, note the odometer (or trip meter) reading and also the number of gallons you needed to add to fill up again.
Your gas mileage will be the number of miles traveled divided by the gas used, for example 90 miles divided by 3 gallons used equals 30 mpg.
An alternate method to use if your odometer doesn’t work, is to find the mileage between two points, drive that, and determine the gasoline used.
